Tanguar

Tanguar is a small island located in the Brahamputra River, Bangladesh. The island is situated in the Upper Surma River, which is a major tributary of the Brahamputra River. Geographically, Tanguar is a part of the Sylhet Division in the northern part of the country.

The island is particularly notable for its unique ecosystem and biodiversity. The Tanguar Island Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers an area of approximately 169 square kilometers, was established in 1983 to protect the island's rich avifauna, including many species of migratory birds. The sanctuary is a protected area of international importance, with over 350 species of birds recorded. The island's waterways and wetlands also support a variety of other wildlife, such as otters, water buffaloes, and elephants.

Tanguar Island has a significant history dating back to ancient times. Archaeological evidence suggests that human settlements existed on the island thousands of years ago. Excavations have uncovered artifacts from the Mohanpur culture, a pre-Ahom culture in northern India and eastern Bangladesh. The island is also close to several important archaeological sites, including Mahipur and A Lanka, which have yielded significant historical artifacts.

Efforts have been made to preserve the ecological integrity of the island, including the creation of the Tanguar Island Wildlife Sanctuary. However, human activities such as deforestation and agriculture have raised concerns about the island's long-term sustainability. The preservation of Tanguar Island and its unique ecosystem remains a priority for both local and international conservation efforts.
