Talgdrüsenüberproduktion, also known as seborrhea or hyperseborrhea, refers to the overactivity of the sebaceous glands in the skin. These glands are responsible for producing sebum, an oily substance that lubricates the skin and hair. While sebum production is essential for healthy skin, an excessive amount can lead to various dermatological issues.

The causes of talgdrüsenüberproduktion are multifaceted and can include hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, due to the influence of androgens. Genetic predisposition also plays a significant role, with some individuals naturally having more active sebaceous glands. Certain medications, stress, and even dietary factors can sometimes contribute to increased sebum production, although the link to diet is often debated and less definitively established.
