Talajsavassággal refers to the acidity of soil. Soil acidity is measured by pH, with a lower pH indicating higher acidity and a higher pH indicating higher alkalinity. The pH of soil is influenced by several factors, including the parent material from which the soil formed, the amount of rainfall, the decomposition of organic matter, and the presence of certain minerals.

Acidic soils, with a pH below 7.0, are common in areas with high rainfall, as the excess water leaches away basic cations like calcium and magnesium, leaving behind hydrogen ions. The decomposition of organic matter can also contribute to acidity through the release of organic acids. In contrast, alkaline soils, with a pH above 7.0, are often found in arid or semi-arid regions where water does not readily leach away basic compounds.

Soil acidity has significant implications for plant growth. Most plants have an optimal pH range in which they can best absorb nutrients from the soil. In highly acidic soils, essential nutrients like phosphorus can become unavailable to plants, while toxic elements like aluminum can be released. In alkaline soils, the availability of micronutrients such as iron and manganese can be reduced.

Farmers and gardeners often amend their soils to adjust the pH for optimal crop production. Lime, a calcium-rich material, is commonly added to acidic soils to raise the pH, while sulfur or acidic fertilizers can be used to lower the pH of alkaline soils. Understanding and managing soil acidity is a crucial aspect of soil science and agricultural practice.
