Takapotkusta

Takapotkusta is a term of Māori origin that refers to a type of traditional Māori dwelling. These structures were primarily built for shelter and were often semi-subterranean. The construction typically involved digging a pit in the ground, which provided insulation and protection from the elements. Over this pit, a frame made of wood was erected, and then covered with materials such as raupo (reeds), toetoe, or tussock grasses.

The interior of a takapotkusta was often a single, communal living space. In colder climates, a central hearth was used for warmth and cooking. The entrance was usually a low opening, sometimes with a small porch or tunnel. The design was practical and adapted to the New Zealand environment, offering a stable and relatively warm living space. While not as elaborate as some other Māori architectural forms like the wharenui (meeting house), the takapotkusta played a vital role in the daily lives of many Māori people, particularly in earlier periods of settlement. Evidence of takapotkusta has been found through archaeological excavations across various parts of New Zealand.
