It refers to a physical phenomenon where waves, such as light or sound, are reflected or scattered back towards their source rather than continuing forward. This effect is common in nature and has various applications.

In optics, backscattering is observed when light interacts with surfaces that are not perfectly smooth or transparent. For instance, when light hits a rough surface like a wall or a piece of paper, it is scattered in many directions, including back towards the observer. This is why we can see opaque objects; the light from a source bounces off them and reaches our eyes. In contrast, specular reflection, like from a mirror, directs light in a single, predictable direction.

The phenomenon of backscattering is crucial in technologies like radar systems. Radar works by emitting radio waves and detecting the waves that are reflected back by objects. The strength and timing of the returned signal provide information about the object's presence, distance, and speed. Similarly, in sonar, sound waves are used to detect underwater objects, with the returning echoes being a form of backscattering.

In atmospheric science, backscattering of sunlight by particles like dust, aerosols, and water droplets contributes to the appearance of clouds and the sky's color.
