Taivutuskokeita, known in English as bending tests, are a fundamental method in materials science and engineering used to determine a material's ability to withstand bending forces. These tests are crucial for assessing the strength, stiffness, and ductility of materials, particularly in applications where components are subjected to loads that cause them to flex.

The most common type of bending test is the three-point bend test. In this configuration, a specimen is supported at two points, and a load is applied at a single point midway between the supports. The load is gradually increased until the material either fractures or reaches a predetermined deflection. The data collected, such as the load applied and the resulting deflection, allows for the calculation of key material properties.

Another common variant is the four-point bend test. Here, the specimen is supported at two points, but the load is applied at two points evenly spaced between the supports. This arrangement creates a region of uniform bending moment across the specimen, which can provide a more accurate measurement of the material's flexural modulus and strength, especially for brittle materials.

The results of bending tests are used to determine the flexural strength, which is the maximum stress a material can withstand before it breaks when subjected to bending. They also yield the flexural modulus, a measure of the material's stiffness or resistance to bending deformation. These parameters are critical for engineers in selecting appropriate materials for structures, machine parts, and various other applications where bending stresses are a significant concern.
