The bending stiffness of a beam or plate is determined by its material properties and its cross-sectional geometry. Specifically, it is proportional to the material's Young's modulus, which quantifies its resistance to elastic deformation, and the area moment of inertia of its cross-section, which describes how the area is distributed relative to the neutral axis. A larger area moment of inertia, often achieved by using deeper or wider cross-sections, leads to greater bending stiffness.

Higher bending stiffness means a structure will deform less under a given load, making it more suitable for applications requiring rigidity. Conversely, lower bending stiffness allows for more flexibility.
