Taideharjoihin, often translated as "art brushes," are essential tools used by artists for applying paint, ink, or other media to a surface. The selection of a brush depends heavily on the medium being used and the desired effect. Different types of brushes are distinguished by their shape, size, and bristle material.

Shapes can range from flat, round, filbert, fan, to liner brushes, each offering unique capabilities for stroke and texture. Flat brushes are good for broad strokes and filling areas, while round brushes are ideal for detail work and fine lines. Filbert brushes combine the features of both flat and round brushes. Fan brushes are useful for blending and creating soft, feathery textures. Liner brushes are designed for very thin lines and lettering.

The bristle material is another crucial factor. Natural bristles, often made from animal hair like sable, hog, or badger, are commonly used in oil and watercolor painting. Sable brushes are highly valued for their ability to hold a lot of liquid and their fine, springy tips, making them excellent for watercolor. Hog bristles are stiffer and more durable, suitable for thicker paints like oils and acrylics. Synthetic bristles, made from nylon or polyester, have become increasingly popular. They are often more affordable, easier to clean, and can be engineered to mimic the properties of natural hair, offering good resilience and durability for various media, including acrylics and watercolors. The choice of brush significantly impacts an artwork's final appearance.
