The term "tagastusperiood" (Estonian for "return period") refers to the average interval between occurrences of a specific flood event of a given magnitude in a particular location. It is a statistical measure used primarily in hydrology and flood risk assessment to quantify the likelihood of flooding. The return period is expressed in years and indicates how often, on average, an event of that size is expected to occur.

For example, a flood with a 100-year return period suggests that there is a 1% annual probability of such an event occurring in any given year. This does not mean the flood will only happen once every century, but rather that over a long period, such an event is statistically expected to recur roughly once every 100 years. Return periods are calculated using historical flood data and probabilistic models, often assuming a general distribution such as the Gumbel or Log-Pearson Type III distribution.

Tagastusperiood is a key concept in flood management, helping engineers and policymakers design infrastructure such as dams, levees, and drainage systems to withstand extreme events. It is also used in insurance and risk assessment to determine flood insurance premiums and zoning regulations. However, critics note that return periods are based on past data and may not account for climate change, which can alter flood frequencies and intensities. As such, ongoing monitoring and adaptive planning are essential to mitigate flood risks effectively.
