This family is characterized by the presence of distinct, often linear or ribbon-like thalli, which are typical of lichens. The photobiont partner in these lichens is usually a green alga, belonging to the genus Trebouxia. The reproductive structures, ascocarps, are typically apothecia, which are disc-shaped or cup-shaped.

The genus Taeniolella, which gives the family its name, includes species that are primarily lichenicolous, meaning they grow on other lichens. However, some species within Taeniolellaceae are lichenized, forming their own thalli. The thalli of Taeniolellaceae can vary in morphology, from crustose (crust-like) to somewhat foliose (leaf-like). They are often found in a variety of habitats, including on bark, rocks, and soil, generally in humid environments.
