Taeniodon

Taeniodon is an extinct genus of therocephalian therapsid that lived during the Late Permian period in what is now South Africa. The name "Taeniodon" means "ribbon tooth," referring to its distinctive dentition. It is known from a single species, Taeniodon antiquus.

This animal was a medium-sized predator, likely inhabiting the terrestrial ecosystems of the Permian. Therocephalians, to which Taeniodon belongs, were a diverse group of therapsids that were among the dominant terrestrial vertebrates before the Triassic period. Taeniodon shared its environment with other synapsids, including gorgonopsians and dicynodonts, as well as various reptiles and amphibians.

The fossil evidence for Taeniodon consists primarily of cranial remains. These indicate a skull of moderate size with a well-developed snout. The most striking feature is its dentition. Taeniodon possessed elongated, flattened teeth that resemble ribbons or blades, particularly in the anterior part of the jaw. This unusual dental morphology suggests a specialized diet, though its exact nature remains a subject of scientific debate. Some researchers propose it may have fed on tough plant material or invertebrates, while others hypothesize a carnivorous or insectivorous diet.
