TRSliittimet, commonly known as TRS connectors, are a type of electrical connector that is frequently used for audio applications. The acronym TRS stands for Tip, Ring, Sleeve, which describes the three conductive parts of the connector. The Tip is the outermost contact, the Ring is the middle contact, and the Sleeve is the innermost contact, often serving as the ground. These connectors are typically manufactured in 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) and 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) sizes, with the 3.5 mm variant being prevalent in headphones and portable audio devices.

TRS connectors can be found in two main configurations: mono and stereo. A mono TRS connector transmits a single audio channel, with both the Tip and Ring carrying the same signal, while the Sleeve acts as ground. In contrast, a stereo TRS connector is designed to carry two independent audio channels. The Tip typically carries the left channel, the Ring carries the right channel, and the Sleeve remains the ground connection. This stereo capability makes TRS connectors ideal for stereo headphones, microphones requiring phantom power, and balanced audio connections.

While common, TRS connectors are not without their limitations. They are not as robust as some other connector types and can be prone to damage if not handled carefully. Furthermore, in some applications, especially with unbalanced signals, interference can be an issue. Despite these drawbacks, their widespread adoption, affordability, and versatility have ensured their continued use in a vast array of audio equipment and consumer electronics.
