TGEV

TGEV refers to the Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus. It is a species of the order Nidovirales, in the family Coronaviridae, and the genus Alphacoronavirus. TGEV is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects pigs, causing a severe and often fatal diarrheal disease known as Transmissible Gastroenteritis (TGE).

The virus spreads through the fecal-oral route and can also be transmitted through aerosol inhalation. TGEV infection leads to inflammation of the small intestine, resulting in vomiting, watery diarrhea, dehydration, and loss of appetite. Piglets are particularly susceptible and have a high mortality rate. In adult pigs, the disease is typically less severe but can still cause significant economic losses due to reduced growth rates and reduced fertility.

Diagnosis of TGEV is usually based on clinical signs, post-mortem examination, and laboratory tests such as virus isolation, RT-PCR, and serological assays. There is no specific antiviral treatment for TGEV. Prevention and control strategies focus on biosecurity measures, vaccination, and sound herd management practices. Strict hygiene protocols, disinfection of premises, and quarantine of new animals are crucial to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus. Vaccination can help reduce the severity of the disease and mortality rates, especially in piglets.
