TDRtestausta, often referred to as TDR testing, is a diagnostic technique used to analyze electrical transmission lines. TDR stands for Time Domain Reflectometry. This method involves sending a short electrical pulse down a transmission line and observing the reflections that return. The timing and amplitude of these reflections provide valuable information about the characteristics of the line, including its impedance, length, and the location of any faults or discontinuities.

The TDR instrument generates a voltage step or pulse that propagates along the cable. When this pulse encounters a change in impedance, such as a connector, splice, bend, or a break, a portion of the pulse is reflected back towards the source. The TDR instrument measures the time it takes for the pulse to travel to the impedance change and return. Since the speed of propagation in the cable is known, this time measurement can be used to calculate the distance to the anomaly.

Similarly, the amplitude of the reflected pulse indicates the nature of the impedance change. A reflection with the same polarity as the incident pulse suggests an increase in impedance, while a reflection with the opposite polarity indicates a decrease in impedance. A complete break in the line will typically result in a large reflection. TDR testing is widely used in various industries, including telecommunications, data networking, and electrical power systems, for troubleshooting cable faults, verifying cable installations, and characterizing transmission line performance. It is a non-destructive testing method that can identify problems without the need to physically access the entire length of the cable.
