Tätööstuse

Tätööstuse is a Finnish term that translates to "tanning industry" or "leather industry." It encompasses the entire process of transforming animal hides and skins into leather, a durable and versatile material. This industry is historically significant in many cultures, including Finland, where it played a role in clothing, footwear, and various other goods.

The tanning process itself is complex and involves several stages. Initially, raw hides are treated to remove flesh, fat, and hair. This is often followed by a curing or preservation step to prevent decomposition. The core of the process is tanning, where agents are used to stabilize the collagen in the hides, preventing them from rotting and making them resistant to moisture and decay. Traditional tanning methods often utilized natural tannins derived from tree bark, while modern methods may employ mineral salts or synthetic chemicals.

After tanning, the leather undergoes further processing, including dyeing to achieve desired colors, fatliquoring to impart softness and flexibility, and finishing to provide protective coatings and specific surface textures.
