Tärinäväsymys

Tärinäväsymys, also known as vibration white finger or hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), is a condition affecting the blood vessels, nerves, and joints of the hands and fingers. It is caused by prolonged exposure to hand-arm vibration, typically from using vibrating tools such as chainsaws, jackhammers, grinders, and drills. The vibration can damage the tiny blood vessels in the fingers, leading to reduced blood flow.

Symptoms of tärinäväsymys usually develop gradually over time. Early signs include tingling and numbness in the fingers, particularly in cold or damp weather. As the condition progresses, affected fingers may turn white, a phenomenon known as vibration-induced blanching. This blanching can be followed by redness and pain as blood flow returns. In more severe cases, persistent numbness, reduced grip strength, and even ulceration of the fingertips can occur. Joint pain and stiffness in the hands and wrists may also develop.

Diagnosis of tärinäväsymys is typically based on a person's work history, exposure to vibrating tools, and a physical examination of the hands and fingers. There is no cure for the condition, but treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing further damage. This involves avoiding or minimizing exposure to vibrating tools, wearing anti-vibration gloves, and keeping the hands warm and dry. Medical management may include medications to improve blood flow or manage pain. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to limit the severity and progression of the syndrome.
