Sølvsølvkloridelektrodens, often abbreviated as Ag/AgCl electrode, is a common type of reference electrode used in electrochemistry. It consists of a silver wire or rod coated with silver chloride, which is immersed in a solution containing chloride ions. The silver chloride coating is typically formed by electrochemically depositing silver chloride onto the silver surface.

The Ag/AgCl electrode provides a stable and reproducible potential that is essential for accurate electrochemical measurements. Its potential is dependent on the concentration of chloride ions in the surrounding electrolyte. In a standard solution of saturated potassium chloride, the potential of a fresh Ag/AgCl electrode is approximately +0.197 V relative to the standard hydrogen electrode at 25°C.

These electrodes are widely used in various applications, including pH measurements, potentiometric titrations, corrosion studies, and biosensor development. They are often preferred over other reference electrodes due to their relative ease of preparation, stability, and low cost. However, it's important to maintain a consistent chloride concentration in the electrolyte to ensure the electrode's potential remains stable. Over time, the silver chloride coating can degrade or become contaminated, which can affect the electrode's performance and necessitate recalibration or replacement. Ag/AgCl electrodes can be found in both single-junction and double-junction configurations, with the latter providing enhanced protection against contamination of the reference electrolyte.
