Sõnaline

Sõnaline is a term used in Estonian linguistics to describe aspects of language that relate to words themselves rather than to meaning or larger discourse. The word is formed from sõna, meaning “word,” and the suffix -line, yielding a sense of “word-related” or “verbal” phenomena.

In linguistic description, sõnaline denotes phenomena at the word level. This includes morphology, such as inflection, derivation, and word formation; word class distinctions (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.); and the syntactic behavior of individual words within phrases and sentences. The term is often used to distinguish word-level analysis from semantic analysis, which focuses on meaning, and from phonological or prosodic analysis, which focuses on sound patterns and rhythm.
