Síkkromatográfiák, commonly known as planar chromatography, represent a group of chromatographic techniques where the stationary phase is coated as a thin layer on a flat surface. This flat surface can be a glass plate, plastic sheet, or aluminum foil, which is then supported by a rigid backing. The mobile phase, a liquid or gas, moves through the stationary phase by capillary action or gravity.

The most prevalent types of planar chromatography are paper chromatography and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). In paper chromatography, a piece of filter paper serves as the stationary phase, while in TLC, a layer of adsorbent material like silica gel or alumina is spread on a plate. Both methods are used to separate components of a mixture based on their differing affinities for the stationary and mobile phases.

The separation process begins by applying a small spot of the sample mixture to the stationary phase, near one edge. This edge is then dipped into the mobile phase, ensuring the solvent level remains below the sample spot. As the mobile phase ascends or moves across the stationary phase, it carries the sample components with it. Components that are more soluble in the mobile phase and have weaker interactions with the stationary phase will travel further, resulting in separation.

Planar chromatography techniques are widely employed in qualitative and quantitative analysis across various fields, including chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmaceuticals. They are valued for their simplicity, low cost, and speed, making them suitable for routine analysis, screening, and method development. While they generally offer lower resolution compared to column chromatography, their accessibility and ease of use make them indispensable tools.
