Sågspån

Sågspån is the Swedish word for sawdust, the byproduct generated from sawing wood. It consists of fine particles of wood, ranging in size and texture depending on the type of wood and the saw used. Historically, sawdust has found numerous practical applications due to its absorbent and insulating properties.

In agriculture, sawdust is commonly used as animal bedding, providing a comfortable and absorbent surface for livestock. It can also be incorporated into compost piles, aiding in decomposition and improving soil structure. In some cases, it has been used as a mulch in gardens to retain moisture and suppress weeds, though care must be taken as it can initially deplete nitrogen from the soil as it breaks down.

Beyond agricultural uses, sawdust has been employed as a fuel source, either directly or after being compressed into pellets. Its high surface area makes it combustible, and in some industrial settings, it is an economical energy option. In construction and crafts, sawdust has been mixed with binders to create various materials, from particleboard to decorative elements. It's also known for its insulating qualities and has been used in building insulation, though modern materials have largely superseded this use.
