Säätöannos

Säätöannos, meaning "adjustment dose" in English, is a term used in pharmacology and medicine to describe a dose of medication that is specifically modified based on a patient's individual response or needs. It is distinct from a standard or starting dose, which is typically a general recommendation for a population. The concept of säätöannos acknowledges that each patient may react differently to a drug due to factors such as metabolism, weight, age, kidney or liver function, or the presence of other medical conditions and medications.

The primary goal of administering a säätöannos is to achieve the desired therapeutic effect while minimizing adverse side effects. This often involves a process of titration, where the dose is gradually increased or decreased until the optimal level is found. For example, in managing chronic pain or certain psychiatric conditions, a physician might start with a low dose and then adjust it upwards over time, monitoring the patient for both effectiveness and any signs of intolerance. Conversely, for medications with a narrow therapeutic index, a lower starting dose might be used, and if the patient does not show sufficient response, the dose might be carefully increased.

The determination of a säätöannos relies heavily on clinical judgment, patient feedback, and sometimes laboratory monitoring. It is a dynamic process, and a patient's säätöannos may change over the course of their treatment.
