Säkerhetssintegritetsnivå, often abbreviated as SIL, is a measure of risk reduction provided by a safety instrumented system (SIS). It quantifies the likelihood that a safety function will not perform its intended function when required. SIL is typically specified on a scale from 1 to 4, with SIL 4 representing the highest level of risk reduction and SIL 1 the lowest. A higher SIL requires a greater reduction in risk, meaning the system must be more reliable and have a lower probability of failure.

The SIL is determined through a risk assessment process that identifies potential hazards and evaluates the associated risks. Based on the acceptable level of risk, a target SIL is assigned to the safety function. Achieving a specific SIL requires adherence to rigorous standards and practices throughout the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of the safety instrumented system. These standards, such as IEC 61508 for functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems, provide guidelines for determining the required architectural constraints, diagnostic coverage, and failure rates of system components.

The concept of SIL is crucial in industries where failures of safety systems can lead to severe consequences, such as the chemical, oil and gas, and nuclear power sectors. By specifying and achieving the appropriate SIL, organizations can ensure that their safety instrumented systems provide an adequate level of protection against potential hazards, thereby minimizing the likelihood of accidents and protecting people, property, and the environment.
