Sähköneristävyys refers to the ability of a material to resist the flow of electric current. It is a fundamental property of materials and is the inverse of electrical conductivity. Materials with high electrical resistance are called electrical insulators, while materials with low electrical resistance are called electrical conductors.

The electrical resistance of a material depends on its chemical composition, physical structure, temperature, and the dimensions of the object being considered. For a uniform conductor, resistance is directly proportional to its length and inversely proportional to its cross-sectional area. The proportionality constant is known as resistivity, which is an intrinsic property of the material. The SI unit for electrical resistivity is the ohm-meter (Ω⋅m).

Insulators are crucial in electrical engineering and everyday life. They are used to prevent short circuits and electric shocks by preventing current from flowing where it is not intended. Common insulating materials include rubber, plastic, glass, ceramics, and dry air. In contrast, conductors, such as metals (copper, aluminum, silver), allow electric current to flow easily. Semiconductors have electrical resistance that falls between that of conductors and insulators and are vital components in electronic devices.
