Sähköhitsauksessa, commonly translated as electric welding, is a fundamental joining process in metal fabrication. It utilizes an electric arc to generate heat, which melts and fuses metal parts together. This method is widely employed due to its efficiency, strength of the resulting joints, and versatility across various materials and applications.

The core principle of electric welding involves creating an electrical circuit. An electric current flows from an electrode, through an arc, to the workpiece, and then back to the power source. This arc, a high-temperature discharge of electricity through the air, melts the base metals and often a filler material, forming a molten pool. As this pool cools, it solidifies, creating a strong metallurgical bond.

There are several common types of electric welding. Arc welding, a broad category, includes processes like shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), also known as stick welding, which uses a flux-coated electrode; gas metal arc welding (GMAW), or MIG welding, which uses a continuous wire electrode and a shielding gas; and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), or TIG welding, which uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas. Each type has specific advantages suited to different tasks, material thicknesses, and environmental conditions. Electric welding requires proper safety precautions, including protective gear for the eyes and skin, due to the intense light, heat, and fumes produced.
