Sähköasemille refers to substations in Finnish. Substations are crucial components of an electrical grid, playing a vital role in the transmission and distribution of electricity. They serve as intermediate points where voltage levels are transformed, managed, and controlled.

The primary function of a substation is to change the voltage of electricity. Typically, electricity is generated at a relatively low voltage. For efficient long-distance transmission, this voltage is stepped up to very high levels. At substations located near consumers, this high voltage is then stepped down to lower voltages suitable for distribution to homes, businesses, and industries. This voltage transformation is achieved using transformers.

Beyond voltage transformation, substations also provide essential functions for grid stability and safety. They house equipment for switching, protection, and control. Circuit breakers and fuses protect the system from overloads and short circuits, preventing damage to equipment and minimizing power outages. Relays monitor the electrical system and initiate protective actions when faults are detected. Control systems allow operators to monitor and manage the flow of electricity, reroute power if necessary, and respond to changing demand.

Substations can vary significantly in size and complexity depending on their specific role within the power system. Some are large facilities with numerous buildings and outdoor equipment, while others may be smaller, more compact installations. They are typically located in secure, accessible areas to facilitate maintenance and operation. The design and construction of substations adhere to strict safety and environmental regulations.
