Sátorok

Sátorok, also known as "sátrák" in colloquial Hungarian, refer to the traditional, circular, portable tents used by nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples, particularly the Hungarian Magyars during their migration from the Pontic-Caspian steppe to the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century. These tents were a key element of their mobile lifestyle, providing shelter while allowing for easy relocation.

The structure of a sátor typically consists of a wooden frame, often made from birch or pine, covered with animal hides or felted wool. The frame is usually conical or dome-shaped, with a central pole supporting the roof. The entrance is often on the side, and the tent is divided into sections, with the main living area and a separate space for cooking or storage. The sátor was designed to be lightweight and durable, capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions while being easily disassembled and transported.

Sátorok played a significant role in Hungarian culture and history, symbolizing the nomadic heritage of the Magyars. They were not only practical for travel but also held social and ceremonial importance. For instance, the sátor was sometimes used as a meeting place for tribal gatherings or as a symbol of hospitality.
