Szóképzési, a Hungarian term, refers to the process of word formation or the creation of new words within the Hungarian language. This can occur through several mechanisms. One primary method is derivation, where a prefix or suffix is added to an existing root word to create a new word with a modified meaning. For example, adding the suffix "-ség" to "szép" (beautiful) creates "szépség" (beauty). Another common method is compounding, where two or more existing words are joined together to form a single, new word. An illustration of this is "vasút" (railway), formed from "vas" (iron) and "út" (road).

Less common, but still significant, are other processes. Conversion, where a word changes its grammatical category without any morphological change, can occur. Also, the blending of parts of two words to create a new one, similar to portmanteau words in other languages, can happen, although this is less systematic.
