Szívprothézisek

Szívprothézisek, commonly referred to as artificial hearts, are mechanical devices designed to replace the function of a failing heart. These devices are used in patients with end-stage heart failure when a heart transplant is not immediately available or is not a suitable option. The primary goal of a szívprothézis is to pump blood throughout the body, restoring circulation and alleviating the severe symptoms associated with advanced heart disease.

There are two main categories of szívprothézisek: total artificial hearts (TAHs) and ventricular assist devices (VADs). A TAH completely replaces both ventricles of the heart, while a VAD assists a weakened ventricle, supporting its pumping action. The first successful implantation of a TAH occurred in 1982. Since then, significant advancements have been made, leading to smaller, more efficient, and more durable devices.

The implantation of a szívprothézis is a complex surgical procedure. These devices are typically powered by an external console, which requires the patient to carry a battery pack and control unit. While a szívprothézis can be a life-saving intervention, it is not without its risks and complications, including infection, blood clots, and device malfunction. Ongoing research continues to focus on developing wireless power sources, improved biocompatibility, and more sophisticated control systems to enhance the long-term effectiveness and quality of life for recipients.
