Színmélységre, or color depth, refers to the number of bits used to represent the color of a single pixel in a digital image. It determines the total number of distinct colors that can be displayed. A higher color depth allows for a greater range of colors and smoother transitions between them, resulting in more realistic and nuanced images.

Common color depths include 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, and 32-bit. An 8-bit color depth can represent 256 colors (2^8). This was common in early computing but can lead to visible banding in gradients. 16-bit color depth, also known as High Color, can display 65,536 colors (2^16). 24-bit color depth, often called True Color, uses 8 bits for each of the red, green, and blue channels, totaling 16.7 million colors (2^24). This is widely used today and is generally sufficient for most applications. 32-bit color depth typically includes an additional 8 bits for an alpha channel, which controls transparency, allowing for effects like semi-transparent images.

The choice of color depth impacts file size; higher color depths require more storage space. For applications where a vast spectrum of colors is crucial, such as professional photography or graphic design, higher color depths are preferred. For less demanding tasks or to optimize for storage and performance, lower color depths might be sufficient.
