Székletátültetés

Székletátültetés, also known as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), is a medical procedure where stool from a healthy donor is transferred to a recipient. The primary goal of this procedure is to restore a healthy balance of gut bacteria in the recipient's digestive system. This is typically done when the recipient's gut microbiome has been disrupted, often due to antibiotic use, which can lead to overgrowth of harmful bacteria.

The most common condition treated with székletátültetés is recurrent Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection. C. diff is a bacterium that can cause severe diarrhea and inflammation of the colon, and it can be very difficult to treat with conventional antibiotics. In cases where antibiotics have failed, FMT has shown a high success rate in clearing the infection and preventing its recurrence.

The procedure itself can be performed through various methods, including colonoscopy, enema, or capsules containing the donor stool. The donor stool is screened thoroughly for infectious agents and other potential health risks before being prepared for transplantation. While primarily used for C. diff, research is ongoing into the potential benefits of FMT for other gastrointestinal conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and even certain metabolic disorders. However, its use for these conditions is still considered experimental.
