Until a measurement is performed, a quantum particle, such as an electron or photon, can be in a combination of all its possible states. This means it doesn't have a definite property, like spin up or spin down, but rather a probability distribution of having either.

This phenomenon is a fundamental departure from classical physics, where an object is always in one specific state. For instance, a classical bit is either 0 or 1, but a quantum bit, or qubit, can be 0, 1, or a superposition of both. This ability is crucial for quantum computing, allowing qubits to represent and process far more information than classical bits.

The mathematical representation of superposition involves wave functions. The state of a quantum system is described by a wave function that is a linear combination of its possible basis states. When a measurement is made, the wave function collapses into one of the basis states, with the probability of collapsing into a particular state determined by the coefficients of the linear combination. This collapse is a probabilistic event, meaning the outcome of a measurement cannot be predicted with certainty. The concept of superposition, despite its counterintuitive nature, has been experimentally verified numerous times and forms the bedrock of many quantum phenomena and technologies.
