The primary goal of leak testing is to ensure the integrity of a sealed system, preventing the escape of its contents or the ingress of external substances.

There are various methods employed for leak testing, each suited to different applications and leak sizes. Some common techniques include pressure decay testing, where a system is pressurized and the pressure drop over time indicates leakage. Vacuum decay testing is similar but involves creating a vacuum and monitoring its increase. Gas detection methods, such as using helium or hydrogen as tracer gases, are highly sensitive and can pinpoint leak locations. Water immersion testing, often used for larger items like welded tanks, involves submerging the object in water and observing for escaping bubbles under pressure. Furthermore, dye penetration testing is used for porous materials to reveal surface-breaking leaks.

The choice of leak testing method depends on factors such as the required sensitivity, the type of fluid being contained, the operating pressure or vacuum, the size and geometry of the component, and the cost-effectiveness of the technique. Regular leak testing is essential for maintaining product quality, ensuring safety, preventing environmental contamination, and optimizing operational efficiency by identifying and rectifying leaks before they cause significant problems.
