Szentségjelek

Szentségjelek, commonly known in English as "hosts" or "consecrated wafers," are small, unleavened breads used in Christian liturgy, particularly within the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and some Anglican traditions. These wafers are central to the sacrament of the Eucharist, also referred to as Holy Communion, where they are believed to become the body of Christ through consecration by a priest during the Mass or Divine Liturgy.

The term *szentségjel* (plural: *szentségjelek*) originates from Hungarian, where *szentség* means "holiness" or "sacrament," and *jel* translates to "sign" or "token." In Hungarian Catholic tradition, these consecrated hosts hold significant spiritual importance, symbolizing the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. They are prepared from wheat flour and water, baked into thin, round wafers, and stored with reverence in tabernacles or pyxes within churches.

During the Eucharistic celebration, the priest blesses and consecrates the host, transforming it into the body of Christ. Believers receive the host either in the hand or on the tongue as a sign of spiritual nourishment and communion with God. In cases where a priest is unavailable, some traditions allow for the reservation of hosts in the tabernacle for later adoration or distribution.

The veneration of szentségjelek extends beyond the Mass, as they are often carried in processions, displayed during Easter celebrations, and used in devotional practices such as the Holy Hour or Eucharistic adoration. Their sacred nature underscores the deep theological significance of the Eucharist in Christian faith, representing both Christ’s sacrifice and the ongoing presence of the divine in the lives of believers.
