Szemprotézis

Szemprotézis, also known as an ocular prosthesis or artificial eye, is a type of medical device designed to replace a missing eye. It is typically made of acrylic or glass and is custom-fitted to match the appearance of the remaining natural eye. The primary purpose of a szemprotézis is cosmetic, aiming to restore a more natural facial appearance after enucleation (removal of the eyeball) or evisceration (removal of the contents of the eyeball).

The process of obtaining a szemprotézis usually begins with a consultation with an ocularist, a specialist trained in the design and fitting of artificial eyes. The ocularist will take impressions or scans of the eye socket to create a custom prosthesis. Color matching is a crucial step, ensuring the iris and sclera of the artificial eye closely resemble those of the natural eye. Some prostheses also incorporate subtle details to mimic blood vessels and other natural variations.

While primarily cosmetic, a szemprotézis can also offer some functional benefits. It helps maintain the shape of the eyelids and prevents the collapse of orbital tissues, which can improve comfort and reduce the risk of infection in the eye socket. It also aids in the natural movement of the eyelids.

Wearing an artificial eye is generally a comfortable experience. The prosthesis is inserted into the eye socket and held in place by suction and the natural muscular support of the socket. Regular cleaning and occasional polishing by the ocularist are necessary to maintain hygiene and ensure the prosthesis remains in good condition. Patients typically adapt well to wearing a szemprotézis, with many reporting a significant improvement in their self-confidence and quality of life.
