Szekrenyes

Szekrenyes is a village in the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County of Hungary, situated on the eastern part of the Great Hungarian Plain. The settlement lies near the Tiszafüred–Logozska road and is approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Szolnok, the county seat. The surrounding landscape is predominantly flat agricultural land, with river valleys formed by tributaries of the Tisza River providing fertile soil for crop cultivation.

The earliest documented mention of Szekrenyes dates back to the early 13th century, when it was referred to in a royal charter as a small peasant community. Throughout its history the village has remained largely agrarian, with generations of residents engaged in wheat, corn and sugar beet farming. The 20th century saw modest diversification, with the introduction of viticulture and the establishment of a small dairy cooperative. The local church, dedicated to Saint Michael, stands as a notable 18th‑century Baroque building, reflecting the historical architectural influences of the region.

According to the most recent census data, the population of Szekrenyes is just over 1,200 inhabitants, with a demographic composition typical of rural Hungarian settlements: a majority of ethnic Hungarians, a small minority of Roma people, and a very small number of Turkish residents. The population has gradually declined since the 1990s, mirroring broader rural depopulation trends in Hungary.

Szekrenyes participates in regional cultural initiatives, including an annual harvest festival that showcases local produce, folk music, and traditional Hungarian dances. In recent years the village has benefitted from European Union rural development funds, which have upgraded local infrastructure such as roadways and community facilities. The village remains representative of the rural, agricultural character that defines much of the Great Hungarian Plain.
