Szeklerland

Szeklerland is a historical and ethnographic region in Romania inhabited primarily by Hungarians known as Szeklers. The term Szeklerland is used to describe the area where Szeklers form a significant majority of the population. Geographically, it is located in the eastern part of Transylvania, a historical region now part of Romania. The Szeklers are a Hungarian subgroup known for their distinct traditions and historical role within the Hungarian Kingdom and later in Transylvania.

The Szeklers were historically a distinct group within the Hungarian administration, often serving as border guards. Their territories were organized into Szekler seats, which had a degree of autonomy. Following the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, the territories of Szeklerland became part of Romania. Today, Szeklerland is not an administrative unit with defined borders within Romania, but rather a concept representing the homeland of the Szekler people. Major cities within this ethnographic region include Târgu Mureș, Sfântu Gheorghe, and Miercurea Ciuc.

The Szekler identity is strongly tied to their Hungarian heritage and distinct cultural practices. There are ongoing discussions and aspirations among some Szeklers for greater autonomy or recognition within Romania. The region is known for its picturesque landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a strong sense of community among its inhabitants. The Szekler flag, featuring a sun and wolf, is a recognized symbol of the region and its people.
