Szeklers

The Szeklers, also known as Székelys, are a Hungarian ethnic subgroup who primarily inhabit the Szeklerland region in eastern Transylvania, Romania. Historically, they have maintained a distinct identity within Hungary and later within Romania. Their language is Hungarian, though with some dialectal variations.

The origins of the Szeklers are a subject of historical debate. Some theories suggest they descended from Old Hungarian tribes, while others propose a more complex admixture of Turkic and Slavic elements alongside Hungarian settlers. Their historical role often involved guarding the eastern borders of the Kingdom of Hungary, a duty that contributed to their unique social structure and traditions.

The Szeklerland is characterized by its distinct cultural heritage, including traditional crafts, folk music, and architecture. The Szeklers have a strong sense of community and a rich history of self-governance, particularly during periods when they held significant autonomy within various historical states.

In contemporary Romania, the Szekler population is a significant minority group. Issues related to their cultural rights, language, and autonomy have been recurrent themes in political discourse.
