SzabolcsSzatmárBeregi
SzabolcsSzatmárBeregi is a former administrative county in northeastern Hungary. It was established in 1950 by the merger of the historical counties of Szabolcs and Bereg, with parts of Ung and Ugocsa counties also incorporated. The county seat was Nyíregyháza. SzabolcsSzatmárBeregi was known for its fertile agricultural land, particularly for fruit and vegetable production. The region also had a significant Ukrainian minority population. In 1990, the county's administrative structure was reorganized, and SzabolcsSzatmárBeregi was dissolved. Its territory was divided into two new counties: Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Hajdú-Bihar. The former county encompassed a diverse landscape, including the Tisza River and the Nyírség region, characterized by sand dunes and pine forests. Historically, the area has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. The region played a role in various historical events, including Mongol invasions and Ottoman rule. The administrative changes in 1990 aimed to decentralize governance and better reflect the regional identities within Hungary.
