Bereg

Bereg is a place name used in Eastern Europe, and it also appears in historical and linguistic contexts. The word is derived from a Slavic root meaning “shore” or “edge” (bereh/bereg), a sense that has given rise to toponyms located along rivers or borders. In Hungarian historical sources the area is known as Nagybereg.

Historically, Bereg County (Nagybereg vármegye) was an administrative unit of the Kingdom of Hungary in the eastern part of the realm. Its territory roughly corresponds to parts of present-day Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine, and its administrative center was the town of Beregszász (Hungarian name for what is today Berehove in Ukrainian). After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the subsequent changes of state borders in the 20th century, the area passed through several political entities and, since World War II, has been part of Ukraine.

In present-day Ukraine, Berehove (Hungarian: Beregszász) is a city in Zakarpattia Oblast near the Hungarian border. It is notable for its multicultural heritage, including a significant Hungarian community, and for its location within a wine-producing region of the region.

Beyond these uses, the name Bereg appears in various localities in the broader region due to shared linguistic roots, reflecting the historical and geographic proximity of communities along shores and borders.
