Syvyystunnetta, a Finnish term, translates to "depth perception" or "sense of depth." It refers to the visual perception of the three-dimensional space and the distance of objects. This ability is crucial for navigating the environment, interacting with objects, and performing everyday tasks safely.

The brain achieves depth perception through a combination of monocular and binocular cues. Monocular cues are those that can be perceived with just one eye. Examples include relative size, where larger objects are perceived as closer, and linear perspective, where parallel lines appear to converge in the distance. Occlusion, or interposition, is another monocular cue, where one object blocking another is perceived as being in front. Texture gradient and atmospheric perspective, where textures become less distinct and colors paler with distance, also contribute.

Binocular cues, on the other hand, rely on the use of both eyes. The most significant binocular cue is binocular disparity, also known as retinal disparity. Because our eyes are spaced apart horizontally, each eye receives a slightly different image of the world. The brain compares these two images and uses the difference to calculate the distance of objects. Convergence, the inward turning of the eyes when focusing on a near object, also provides a cue to its proximity.

Disorders affecting depth perception can arise from various causes, including visual impairments, neurological conditions, or damage to specific brain areas responsible for processing visual information. Impaired depth perception can lead to difficulties with tasks such as driving, catching a ball, or even simply walking without tripping.
