System software refers to a set of programs designed to control and coordinate the computer hardware and provide a platform for running application software. It sits between the hardware and the applications, offering common services and an interface to the underlying resources. The most prominent type is the operating system, which manages CPU time, memory allocation, device I/O, file systems, and basic security and networking. Other system software includes device drivers, which translate OS and application commands into device-specific operations; firmware, which is software embedded in hardware components; and system utilities and boot loaders that prepare the system for operation and maintain its health.

Operating systems come in various forms, such as general-purpose desktops and servers (Windows, macOS, Linux distributions) and mobile systems (Android, iOS). They may adopt different kernel architectures, including monolithic, microkernel, or hybrid designs, affecting performance and modularity. The OS provides APIs and services that applications use to perform tasks without requiring direct hardware control.

Firmware resides in non-volatile memory and initializes hardware during boot, controls low-level hardware behavior, and can be updated to fix bugs or add features. Utilities and orchestration tools help with maintenance, diagnostics, backups, and security.

System software is essential for the correct and efficient operation of a computer. While application software relies on it to function, system software must remain robust and secure, as flaws or failures can affect the entire system’s stability and security.
