Each runlevel is associated with a specific set of processes that should be running. SysVinit uses scripts located in directories like /etc/rc.d/ or /etc/init.d/ to control the startup and shutdown of services for each runlevel.

When the system boots, SysVinit reads configuration files to determine which runlevel to enter. It then executes a series of shell scripts sequentially to start or stop services as defined for that runlevel. These scripts typically follow a naming convention with prefixes like S for start and K for kill, followed by a number indicating the order of execution.

While SysVinit was a robust and stable init system, it had limitations. For instance, its sequential nature could lead to slower boot times, and managing dependencies between services could be complex. The introduction of more modern init systems like systemd, which offer parallel service startup and more sophisticated dependency management, has led to SysVinit being phased out in many mainstream Linux distributions. However, some systems and embedded devices may still use SysVinit or variations thereof.
