Sydänlihasolut

Sydänlihasolut, also known as cardiomyocytes, are the specialized muscle cells that make up the heart muscle (myocardium). These cells are responsible for the heart's ability to contract and pump blood throughout the body. Unlike skeletal muscle cells, which are voluntarily controlled, or smooth muscle cells, which contract involuntarily in organs like the digestive tract, cardiomyocytes are characterized by their unique structure and function that enable the rhythmic and forceful contractions of the heart.

Cardiomyocytes are striated, meaning they have a striped appearance due to the arrangement of contractile proteins called actin and myosin. They are branched in shape and typically contain one or two nuclei. A key feature of cardiomyocytes is their interconnectedness through specialized junctions called intercalated discs. These discs contain gap junctions that allow electrical impulses to pass rapidly from one cell to the next, enabling the entire heart muscle to contract in a coordinated manner. This electrical coupling is essential for maintaining a regular heartbeat.

The energy requirements of cardiomyocytes are exceptionally high, and they rely heavily on aerobic respiration, utilizing a large number of mitochondria. They have a dense capillary network to ensure a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients. Damage to cardiomyocytes, such as during a heart attack, can lead to permanent loss of function, as these cells have limited regenerative capacity. The study of cardiomyocytes is crucial for understanding cardiovascular diseases and developing treatments.
