Sydänlihasoluilla

Sydänlihasolut, also known as cardiomyocytes, are specialized muscle cells that make up the heart muscle, the myocardium. These cells are the functional units of the heart, responsible for its continuous and rhythmic contractions that pump blood throughout the body.

Cardiomyocytes are distinct from other muscle cells, such as skeletal muscle cells, in several key ways. They are typically shorter, branched, and connected to each other by specialized junctions called intercalated discs. These discs contain gap junctions, which allow electrical impulses to pass rapidly from one cell to another, enabling the synchronized contraction of the entire heart. They also contain desmosomes, which provide strong mechanical connections, preventing the cells from pulling apart during contraction.

The cytoplasm of a cardiomyocyte is densely packed with mitochondria, reflecting the high energy demands of the heart. These organelles are responsible for generating the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that fuels muscle contraction. Cardiomyocytes also contain a highly organized sarcoplasmic reticulum, a network of membranes that stores and releases calcium ions, which are crucial for initiating the contractile process.

Unlike skeletal muscle, which is under voluntary control, cardiomyocyte contraction is involuntary and regulated by the heart's intrinsic conduction system. Pacemaker cells within the heart generate electrical impulses that spread through the cardiomyocytes, triggering a coordinated heartbeat. The heart rate can be modulated by the autonomic nervous system and hormones, but the fundamental rhythm originates from within the heart muscle itself. Damage to cardiomyocytes, as seen in conditions like myocardial infarction, can impair the heart's ability to pump effectively.
