Sydämentykyttely

Sydämentykyttely, known in English as palpitations, refers to the sensation of feeling one's own heartbeat. This can manifest as a rapid, fluttering, pounding, or skipping heartbeat. Palpitations are a common symptom and can be experienced by people of all ages. While often benign and related to temporary factors, they can sometimes indicate an underlying medical condition.

Various factors can trigger palpitations. These include emotional states such as stress, anxiety, and panic attacks. Physical exertion, caffeine intake, nicotine use, and alcohol consumption are also common triggers. Certain medications, including decongestants and asthma inhalers, can also cause palpitations. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy, menopause, or menstruation, can contribute as well.

In some cases, palpitations may be a sign of a more serious issue. These can include arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms), heart disease, thyroid problems, or anemia. If palpitations are frequent, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting, it is important to seek medical attention. A doctor can evaluate the cause of palpitations through a physical examination, electrocardiogram (ECG), or other diagnostic tests to determine the appropriate course of action.
