Sydämenlyöntiin, also known as a heartbeat, refers to the rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle that pumps blood throughout the body. This vital process ensures that oxygen and nutrients are delivered to all tissues and organs, while waste products are removed. The heart's pumping action is controlled by an electrical system that generates impulses, causing the different chambers of the heart to contract in a coordinated sequence.

The normal resting heart rate for adults typically ranges between 60 and 100 beats per minute. During exercise or periods of heightened emotion, the heart rate increases to meet the body's increased demand for oxygen. Conversely, during sleep or relaxation, the heart rate slows down.

The sound of a heartbeat, often described as "lub-dub," is produced by the closing of the heart valves. The first sound, "lub," is caused by the closure of the mitral and tricuspid valves, while the second sound, "dub," is caused by the closure of the aortic and pulmonary valves. Deviations from the normal rhythm or sound can sometimes indicate underlying health issues and may warrant medical attention.
