Swit

Swit is a town and commune in the central Verdaran region of Verdara. It is situated on the Paline River, approximately 40 kilometers north of Verdara’s capital, and spans about 36 square kilometers. As of 2023, the municipal population is around 12,400. The town serves as a local administrative and economic center for surrounding villages.

Swit originated as a small market settlement in the late 12th century, growing around a pair of mills that used water power from the Paline. It gained charter status in the 14th century and developed as a regional trade hub through the medieval period. The 19th century brought industrialization, with several textile mills and a wood-processing facility, followed by interwar modernization and postwar rebuilding after damage from regional conflicts. The late 20th century saw diversification toward services and logistics.

Current economic activity includes light manufacturing, logistics, retail, and tourism. The Swit Market, dating to the 17th century and rebuilt in the 20th, remains a focal point for local commerce. The town hosts a small industrial park and a logistics center that serves a wider rural area.

Swit is home to Swit University of Verdara (SUV), founded in 1965, and to several cultural venues, including the Old Town Hall and the Saint Helena Cathedral. The annual Festival of Lights in December is a notable local event. The town preserves several historical buildings and a timber-framed district as protected heritage sites.

Swit operates under a mayor-council government. It has a 12-member municipal council and public services including schools, healthcare, and libraries. Transportation links include Swit Railway Station on regional lines and a network of roads connecting to national routes, with local buses providing urban transport.
