Svettekanaler, also known as sweat glands, are specialized structures found in the skin of most mammals, including humans. They play a crucial role in the body's thermoregulation and hydration processes. There are two main types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine.

Eccrine glands are the most numerous and are found throughout the body, with the exception of the lips, palms, and soles. They are responsible for the majority of sweat production and are involved in thermoregulation. When the body temperature rises, eccrine glands release sweat onto the skin's surface, which then evaporates, cooling the body through a process known as evaporative cooling.

Apocrine glands are less common and are primarily found in the axillae (armpits), groin, and areolae (areas around the nipples). They produce a thicker, milky sweat that contains proteins and lipids. Apocrine sweat is involved in the body's immune response and is also a precursor to the production of pheromones, which are chemical signals that can influence behavior and reproduction.

Both types of sweat glands are innervated by the sympathetic nervous system, which allows for the regulation of sweat production in response to environmental and physiological cues. Sweat glands are also involved in the body's defense mechanisms, as they can help to dilute and remove potentially harmful substances from the skin's surface.

In some individuals, sweat glands may become overactive, leading to conditions such as hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. Conversely, in others, sweat glands may become underactive, resulting in conditions such as anhidrosis, or the absence of sweating. These conditions can have significant impacts on an individual's quality of life and may require medical intervention.
