Svartsengi

Svartsengi is a geothermal field on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland, just northeast of Grindavík, near Keflavík International Airport. The area is characterized by dark basaltic lava fields and a high-temperature geothermal reservoir. The field is home to the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Station, a facility that has supplied electricity and district heating to the surrounding region since the late 20th century.

The Svartsengi Power Station uses steam from subterranean reservoirs to drive turbines for electricity, and uses hot water for district heating networks serving towns on the peninsula. The plant also produces cooling water and geothermal liquids that are reinjected or utilized elsewhere. The operation is integrated with the local energy system, illustrating Iceland's emphasis on geothermal energy.

A by-product of the plant's cooling and runoff water formed a large, naturally occurring, mineral-rich pool, which later became the Blue Lagoon, a world-famous spa and tourist attraction. The lagoon is known for its milky blue waters rich in silica and minerals, and it is used for therapeutic treatments and recreation. The Blue Lagoon's development and branding are closely tied to the Svartsengi facility.

The name Svartsengi translates roughly as "black field" or "black meadow," reflecting the dark volcanic terrain of the region. The Svartsengi area remains notable for demonstrating how geothermal resources can support energy supply and tourism in Iceland, and it continues to be a focal point in discussions of sustainable energy and regional development.
