Suurenebad

Suurenebad is a municipality in the district of Bautzen in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. The village lies on the left bank of the river Neisse, close to the border with the Czech Republic. It is part of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft (administrative community) of Breitnau. The elevation of Suurenebad ranges from 210 to 235 meters above sea level, and the total area of the municipality is approximately 12 square kilometres.

The earliest documentary mention of Suurenebad dates back to 1284, when it was recorded as a settlement within the territory of the Prince-Bishopric of Naumburg-Roth. Over the centuries, Suurenebad was part of the Margraviate of Lusatia and later the Kingdom of Saxony. During the Thirty Years' War, the village suffered significant population losses. In the 19th century, the establishment of a small railway station on the Bautzen–Dresden line enhanced local commerce.

The local economy is largely based on agriculture, forestry, and small-scale manufacturing. In addition, Suurenebad is known for its traditional folk festivals, especially the annual "Neissefest," which celebrates the cultural heritage of the region. The municipality maintains several historical sites, including a parish church built in the late Gothic style and a 17th‑century manor house that now serves as a community centre.

Suurenebad is accessible via the B 179 federal highway and is served by regional bus routes that connect it to larger urban centres such as Bautzen and Dresden. The population as of the most recent census is approximately 1,900 residents, with a demographic mix that reflects a blend of Saxon and Lusatian traditions. The municipality places an emphasis on preserving natural landscapes, evident in its network of walking trails that traverse the surrounding forested hills.
